The bilateral relations are governed by the Convention of Friendship and Good Neighbourhood of March 31, 1939 and by other several thematic agreements.
Formal meetings between the authorities of both countries are very frequent.
After 27 years from the previous presidential visit, the 13th June 2014 the Past President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, has made the State visit in the Republic of San Marino.
